Bengaluru: Bengalureans have had it easy for a while, buying some vegetables for as little as Rs 10 a kg. But their luck has run out with unseasonal rain in South Karnataka destroying crops over the last week and causing a sudden spurt in the prices of essential vegetables.
For the first time in two years, beans are selling for over Rs 100 a kg in city markets thanks to the crop loss in the districts supplying them.
"Beans are a perishable vegetable and due to the rain, farmers growing them have suffered a huge loss. The short supply has pushed the price to over Rs 100 a kg in the city,” said a vegetable vendor from Yeshwanthpur, Mallesh Gowda, pointing out that the prices of tomatoes, potatoes, onions and green chillies are also rising with every passing day owing to their short supply caused by crop loss in the districts following unseasonal rain.
"If the rain continues for a few more days, the prices of these vegetables could go up even more,” he warned.
A vegetable supplier, Ventakest Bhat, however, assures that their prices could stablise in coming months, especially in May and June, which are considered the marriage season.
