Chennai cops begin operation clean-up
Chennai: With the election just two months away, the Chennai police has started operation clean up to handle as many as 388 history sheeters who are very active in the city. “Various measures, including using of externment of criminals act (naadukadathal) will be taken to handle them,” police sources said here.
The city police had decided to use the section 51A of the police Act (power to direct to removal of persons from the city in special cases) in July 2013, but used it in 2014 March as part of a ‘clean up’ tool before parliament election. Other option to send the hardened history sheeters to jail under preventive detection.
The number of history sheeters could be as high as 3,400 in the city.
“But hardcore ones comprise only 10 per cent of the total list. We are focusing only on hard-core people now. This may include rowdies, antisocial elements and trouble-makers. The entire state me have over 17,000 history sheeters. But when it comes to hardcore ones, it will be around just over 2,000,” police sources noted.
