Thiruvananthapuram: Defeated leaders to be kept out

But an exception has been made in the case of Konni MLA Adoor Prakash who may be fielded from Attingal Lok Sabha seat.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Congress will not give ticket to sitting MLAs and those who have been defeated twice or more in the previous Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. But an exception has been made in the case of Konni MLA Adoor Prakash who may be fielded from Attingal Lok Sabha seat.

Shanimol Usman, the lone woman member in the political affairs committee, has been eyeing the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat. But she was defeated twice in the Assembly elections-- Ottapalam(2016) and Perumbavoor (2006). In 2009, she was offered the Kasaragod Lok Sabha seat, but she declined it saying it was a CPM bastion. She stepped down from the post of AICC secretary earlier hoping to contest from Alappuzha. But K. C. Venugopal walked away with the seat and his stock has gone up in the party.

K. Sudhakaran had lost the 2014 LS elections from Kannur and 2016 Assembly elections from Uduma. But his fight against the CPM in Kannur and the hunger strike staged against the killing of Youth Congress leader S. P. Shuhaib have put him back into the reckoning.

“The veteran Congress leaders should move out for the young crop of leaders, including women, instead of clinging to power,” said a senior woman Congress leader.
