Hyderabad: A Public Interest Litigation has been filed before the Telangana High court seeking a direction to the state government to construct a new building to House Osmania General Hospital, a 150-year-old institution spread over 25 acres of land, citing that the present building had crossed 85 years of existence and a part of it has been declared as a heritage structure.
Dr K. Mahesh Kumar, president of Healthcare Reforms Doctors Association, submitted that eight out of 11 blocks in the building were unfit for treating patients as they were very old and the building has outlived its lifetime.
Highlighting the inconvenience to the patients and hospital staff, the petitioner contended that there were many old structures in the campus, which could be demolished and multi-storied buildings could be constructed for the convenience of patients and doctors. Except for the IP block, other buildings could be demolished as it has been categorised as a Heritage building, he added.
The principal secretary of health, medical and family welfare department, the director of medical education and the Telangana state medical services infrastructure development department are the respondents in the PIL. The plea will come up for hearing before the division bench headed by the Chief Justice on March 19.
