Kozhikode: Civic body steps in to save Mahila Mall

Flower show, food fest, eating competition.

KOZHIKODE: The municipal corporation has started various measures along with Kudumbasree to ensure the success of Mahila Mall, the all women run shopping mall under Kudumbasree, with a wide variety of programmes.

A flower show and food festival is already on at the Mall where many attractive and novel programmes would be held in the coming days.

On Sunday the Mall will host a contest to find out the tallest and shortest among the members of Kudumbasree A rusk-eating competition also would be held on the day itself. A banana eating competition was held on February 10 at the Mall which was a big draw.

The month long programmes will be concluded on March 10.

In the flower show many plants, flowers, seeds and other planting material were exhibited. Each day many novel food items both traditional and from outside are on display.

It was with much hype the Kozhikode Corpo-ration Kudumbashree CDS opened the Mahila Mall, claimed to be the first ever all women run Mall in the nation.

The aim was to provide an exclusive shopping and chill out space for women and also for women entrepreneurs. But now the mall that houses only women entrepreneurs is in the verge of closure, as Kudumbashree failed to attract people to the center.

The 35,000 sqft mall at present has 68 shops in three floors, occupied by women entrepreneurs, among which few of them are from Kudumbashree. The Unity group of Kudumbashree is running the venture located at the Wayanad road near Christian College.

Public are of the perception that since the venture is branded under Kudumbashree, the mall features only the products including small groceries developed by the Kudumbahsree members.

Infact only once you enter the mall you will find the diverse collection of products ranging from beauty parlour, women’s bank, fancy stores, textiles and ready-made dress items, boutiques, footwear, dry cleaning, like any other malls in Kozhikode city.
