Kudumbashree for garbage-free Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kudumbasree Mission will work with Haritha Keralam Mission, Suchitwa Mission and Clean Kerala Company for a garbage-free Kerala. There are 719 Haritha Kerala Karma Sena groups functioning in 689 local bodies now, including 638 panchayats and 81 municipalities. These groups have 22,119 members who are mainly Kudumbasree workers. The powers to select Haritha Keralam Sena are with the local bodies.

Kudumbasree workers along with the local bodies are carrying out tasks, including collection of plastic and biodegradable waste from households. The plastic waste will be collected on a weekly and monthly basis from households, flats and establishments. Kudumbasree workers are already in the forefront in running shredder units installed with the help of Clean Kerala Company in panchayats, municipalities and corporations. They will now be given technical support and training by Haritha Keralam Mission and Suchitwa Mission.

The Haritha Karma Sena will also carry plastic waste collected from houses and establishments to shredding units for recycling. According to the mission, the shredded plastic is being given to the local bodies for road tarring by Clean Kerala Company. Each Kudumbasree worker will visit 300 houses to collect biodegradable waste. The collection will be based on user fee. The manufacture of environment-friendly materials, maintenance of waste disposal mechanism, organic farming, environment-friendly equipment on rent and compost making and associated works will be taken up by Haritha Karma Sena members.
