Madras High Court rejects plea to make Jayalalithaa's residence a memorial
Chennai: The Madras high court has dismissed a petition which sought a direction to the state government to convert the residence of former Chief Minister late J.Jayalalithaa at Poes Garden as her memorial. A division bench comprising Justices Huluvadi G.Ramesh and R.Mahadevan dismissed the PIL filed by S.Parthiban of Saidapet.
The bench said, “It appears that seeking an identical relief a petition was filed before the Madurai Bench of this court and by an order dated January 12, 2017, the said petition was dismissed as not maintainable. In view of the above, nothing remains to be reconsidered in the present petition. Petition is dismissed”. According to petitioner, the four-time chief minister late Jayalalithaa during her tenure as chief minister had introduced several schemes for the welfare of the public, which included all women police stations to take care of the grievances of the women and Amma Unavagam, which benefited several downtrodden people, daily wage labourers and other poor people.
She had dedicated her life to the welfare of the people and sacrificed her life for the people. She was in possession and enjoyment of the Veda Nilayam residence in Poes Garden her demise, the politicians belonging to AIADMK party were using the party and not by her legal heirs. Therefore, he sent a representation to the authorities to convert the residence of Jayalalithaa as a memorial house for her. But no action was taken. Recently, former chief minister O.Paneerselvam had announced that the residence of Jayalalithaa will be converted into Amma Memorial. Thereafter, no action was taken, he added.
