SAMEER lab to help Indian Navy in Visakhapatnam

Lab to carry out research in the field of electromagnetic interference and compatibility

Visakhapatnam: The Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3), lab of Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER) being established in Vizag will carry out research activities in the field of Electromagnetic Interference and Compatibility.

Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) is the most commonly occurring scenario between the electronic products, causing a potential threat to strategic sectors.

Establishment of such a lab in Vizag gains significance in the backdrop of presence of the strategic defence assets like Eastern Naval Command (ENC) and NSTL here.

“In order to evaluate the performance of electronics and electrical products from various sectors, there is a need to establish a dedicated centre to provide all the required test and measurement facilities. The defence systems are increasingly dependent on various electronic systems and radio spectrum that cause electromagnetic interference (EMI) between various systems / subsystems ultimately causing disturbance in their normal function,” Department of Electronics and IT, senior director, B.M. Baveja, told reporters here on Tuesday.

The foundation stone for SAMEER’s lab will be laid by Union IT and communications minister K. Ravishankar Prasad and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on February 18.

Mr Baveja added that there is a potential concern of Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) on telecom, radar, electric power, banking and financial service etc.

The establishment of this Centre for EMI/EMC/EMP facility in the vicinity of Visakhapatnam will benefit number of vendors on the east coast as well as the Indian Navy.

“The objective will be realised by establishing the facilities at a total outlay of '80.02 crores. Development of technical knowhow in the areas which are generally denied by other countries to share will be the major outcome from the Centre,” Mr Baveja added.
