First volunteer took jab to set example

Was apprehensive of taking vaccine at first but was convinced by doctors, says Krishnamma

Hyderabad: Over 3,500 frontline healthcare workers in government hospitals were administered the Covid-19 vaccine on Saturday. The vaccination campaign began simultaneously at various locations in the state where ministers and other public representatives were present.

Frontline workers who received the vaccine at different places in the state told Deccan Chronicle that they did not experience any side-effects after the vaccine.

Dr Ajitha, assistant professor of general surgery, Osmania General Hospital, who was among the first to be administered the vaccine, said, “I have not felt any side-effects or weakness since I got the vaccine. Even though there is a lack of confidence among people with regard to Indian vaccines, it is our duty as frontline workers to instill confidence among the public, so everyone is safe and healthy".

A doctor at the Government Chest Hospital said that she was relieved after taking the vaccine and that the facilities provided were well thought of.

“We were given the shot in a room set up for the vaccine administration, after which we were taken to an observation room where we were told to stay for some time to watch for side-effects or dizziness. Thankfully, all healthcare workers received the vaccine well,” she said.

S. Krishnamma, a sanitation worker, became the first person in the state to be administered the vaccine. She took the vaccine at Gandhi Hospital amid cheers by those present, including Union minister of state G. Kishan Reddy and health minister Etala Rajendar, at the Gandhi Hospital.

"I was a little apprehensive earlier, but my hospital superintendent assured me and so I decided to take the vaccine. Like myself, I know that a lot of people and even the staff here are scared. I can be an example for them to not be scared, and come forward,” said Krishnamma.

She also said she did not have any health complaints after taking the vaccine and appealed to all to receive the vaccine with courage in order to protect one's health.

The vaccination drive on Saturday took place at 144 centres in the state with 30 people each slated to receive the vaccine shot. The state government has invited the participation of public representatives in the programme to spread awareness among people.
