Painting to help cancer-hit children

They have been conducting exhibitions for several years to help people in need.

Kozhikode: A group of 101 women artists have gathered at the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi with the best of their works on canvas to raise money for treating children who have cancer.

Mayor Thottathil Raveendran opened the exhibition named 'Sneha Varnangal' on Wednesday.

The works of artists hailing from various parts of Kozhikode primarily focus on traditional themes including Kathakali. Mural paintings are the highlight of the group show.

They have been conducting exhibitions for several years to help people in need.

"All the artists are homemakers," said an organiser.

"Many of us are learning paintings at one place, and hence we all know each other for years. This collaboration is one reason why we together conduct such shows."

They started the initiative in 2013 and initially, they were only ten homemakers.

"Now after six years, we have developed this group into 101 and is growing with more talented homemakers joining the community instead of withdrawing into the four corners of their house," she said.

The show will conclude on January 20.
