No conductors in KSRTC Chill' buses soon

The idea was proposed by MDTomin J Thachankary himself in a recent high- level meet of top officials.

Kochi: The point-to-point low-floor air conditioned 'Chill' buses being operated by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) would be soon made conductor-less.

The cost-cutting measure, which will also resolve acute staff shortage crisis post mass retrenchment of empanelled conductors, will be implemented in 180 'Chill' buses in a step-by-step manner.

The idea was proposed by MDTomin J Thachankary himself in a recent high- level meet of top officials."The buses running in Thiruvananthapuram-Ernakulam and Ernakulam-Kozhikode routes anyway have only select stoppages and at depots. The station masters/iInspectors can dole out the tickets to passengers before the bus departs," said sources.

The door in the middle portion of the buses will be closed and additional two seats will be fitted in order to increase the passenger capacity. ""The experimental service will be started in a month's time. The move will also help in redeployment of the conductors in other services which are currently not operated due to conductor shortage," the sources said.

Only 1,240 new PSC candidates have joined the service instead of the nearly 4000 empanelled staff terminated as per the direction of the High Court.
