Kerala govt stops sea washing, stir talks on

The chief minister told the meeting that sea erosion was because of sea washing.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Joint Action Committee of Alappad residents was left considering the suspension of its stir “Save Alappad, Stop Mining” following the govt decision to stop sea washing at Alappad. The decision to stop sea washing was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan here on Wednesday.

The meeting of people’s representatives and senior officials was called in the wake of the action committee’s decision to intensify their agitation.

The chief minister told the meeting that sea erosion was because of sea washing.

The people's representatives should make the people aware of the government intervention in the area.

As per the decision, the sea washing process through which sand is mined directly from the sea will be suspended temporarily.

Industries minister E. P. Jayarajan will hold discussions with the action committee. A high-level expert committee will be constituted to study the issues.

A monitoring committee comprising district collector and people’s representatives will be formed to control the ongoing mining in the area scientifically. The government is hopeful of resolving the problem through these measures.

“We discussed the problems people of Alappad faced and the destruction to the coast. We drew the attention of the government towards the immediate need to resolve these issues. The government has taken a very positive stand on the issue,” said R. Ramachandran MLA, after the meeting.
