Hyderabad: Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao announced that the Budget session of the Assembly will be held from March 12. The Government was considering possibilities on holding the panchayat elections in February.

He said the election procedure would be incorporated in the proposed Panchayat Raj Bill to be introduced in the Assembly. An amount of Rs 2,000 crore would be allotted to the state finance commission in the budget. He addressed the collectors’ meeting at Pragati Bhavan on Tuesday.

The CM said, the government was still discussing if it should hold direct or indirect elections to the sarpanch post.

He said that for the creation of new panchayats, boundaries should be fixed according to geographical proposals sent by the officials.

New panchayats would have to be created without giving any scope to court litigations.

At present, there were 8,684 gram panchayats and 4,000 could be set up.
