4 new Omicron cases found in Telangana

Three of the four new cases were people who came into the city from Kenya, and the fourth was an Indian citizen

Hyderabad: Telangana state on Thursday reported four more cases of the Omicron variant of Covid-19. This has taken total cases discovered in the state to seven the so far. Of these seven Omicron cases, one family whose seven-year-old boy was found to be infected by the Omicron variant, had left for Kolkata taking a connecting flight from the RGI airport on the night of December 12.

Director of public health and family welfare, in a brief comment, said the cases were all from among people arriving from other countries. Three of the four new cases were people who came into the city from Kenya, and the fourth was an Indian citizen, he said.

While three of the four new positive cases came from non-risk countries, one arrived from an at-risk country.

Thursday’s announcement that three of the four new Omicron cases found during the day were among people from Kenya, takes the number of Kenyans in the city affected by Omicron caused Covid-19 to four. The fifth is a man from Somalia, and the sixth is an Indian citizen. With the seventh case already leaving the city for Kolkata, as on Thursday, Telangana has six confirmed cases of Omicron.

The Director of Public Health said further details on the Omicron cases found on Thursday, would be revealed on Friday.

The two cases in the city declared on Wednesday, were of people living in the Paramount Hills Colony in Tolichowki area falling under the Banjara Hills police station limits.

Staff from the health department and the GHMC on Thursday said they collected more than 750 samples – to test for Covid-19 - from residents of the colony, including 150 from the residential complex the Somali man, and the Kenyan woman lived in. The staff also said there was a containment zone in the area but for most day, people were seen moving about freely in the area.

Meanwhile, the state health department said there were 190 new Covid-19 cases in the state, along with two more deaths on Thursday. Hyderabad city reported an increase of new cases on Thursday at 83, up from 63 on Wednesday.
