Hyderabad: Downpour exposes poor road quality

Citizens also asked the authorities not to dig the newly laid roads to lay pipes.

Hyderabad: The rain on Friday exposed the poor quality of work that went into laying roads in the city. The recently laid roads in Serlingampally, Kukatpally and other peripheral circles were severely damaged after a spell of moderate rainfall.

Hyderabad received 4.6 cm rainfall on Thursday which resulted in potholes opening up on roads newly laid by the GHMC and Hyderabad Road Development Corporation (HRDC).

The roads near Lingampally-Tellapur entrance (near Lingampally flyover) and opposite Jayini multi-specialty hospital, which were laid recently, were damaged severely.

Mr K. Vasishta Chowdary of GNT Circle, Nallagandla, said, “This exposes the quality of road laid by the authorities. The road was severely damaged for at least one kilometre with several potholes and craters forming up. Even though they have assured on social media that the issue would be resolved, the million-dollar question is why were the new roads damaged,”

“Very pathetic to see Hyderabad roads, especially at prime locations like Kukatpally and western parts of the city, clogged with rain water. The authorities failed to take measures to pump the water out. Motorists are struggling, said Mr Pothuluri Veerabrahmam, a social activist.

He said that the government departments claim credit when everything goes well, but when things go wrong the HRDC and the GHMC pass the buck.

Citizens also asked the authorities not to dig the newly laid roads to lay pipes.

“The civic body is laying a new road in Sudarshan Colony, Road No. 1 in Serilingampally and the HMWS&SB is laying sewerage and drinking water pipelines. I request the GHMC to hold the work until the completion of pipeline laying,” said Mr M. Aditya Reddy, a resident of Serilingampally.
