Hyderabad: The name ‘Pootharekulu’ created quite some curiosity in Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao during his college days. Mr. Rao stumbled upon this strange word after watching a Telugu film starring Sobhan Babu.
Going down the memory lane, Mr Rao said he did not understand its meaning and hence asked his college lecturer Mudigonda Veerabhadriah. He too had no idea, and told him it might be ‘Poolarekulu’ and the lyricist might have committed a small mistake by not getting the word right.
“But then I insisted that that might not be the case. Even in the lyrics book, it was spelt as Pootharekulu. To clear my doubt, my master wrote a letter to his colleague in Vijayawada seeking his view. The Vijayawada friend ended the confusion. He said that it was the name of a sweet dish very popular in Andhra region,” Mr Rao said.
In present times, everybody has an idea about Pootharekulu because it is sold in many sweets shops, but he was talking about 1972 when the Andhra sweets were not sold here, KCR said.
The crowd at LB Stadium heard this narration by the Chief Minister with very rapt attention amidst intermittent cheering.
