The branch did not dispense cash for the three days after it was reopened on Tuesday.

Kurnool: An angry mob has locked a State Bank of India (SBI) branch at Peapully on Thursday after bank officials told them that they don’t have cash to dispense.

The branch did not dispense cash for the three days after it was reopened on Tuesday. As the three days prior to Tuesday were holidays, people were left without cash for the six days.

SBI is the only bank catering to the needs of farmers, and customers here at Peapully and surrounding villages. On Tuesday, people got agitated when they found “No-Cash” board at the branch counter.

Around 200 people shouted slogans against the bank. Later they asked the bank staff to come out of the branch and locked it from outside. A large number of pensioners, farmers, differently-abled people took part in the agitation.

When the situation turned ugly, the police intervened to calm down the situation.
Circle inspector G. Prasad discussed the matter with bank officials, who in turn took up the issue with their regional officers and sought a solution.

People called off their protest after the bank manager assured them that cash would be dispensed without interruption from Monday.
