Nims nurses protest for promotions, warn of stir

The nurses said they had been working for more than 10 years and were still awaiting promotions.

Hyderabad: Nurses at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (Nims) protested on Friday and warned that they would go on strike from December 1 if their demands regarding promotions were not met. The protest was triggered by Thursday’s suicide attempt by nurse K. Nirmala Rani. She is recovering in the intensive care unit of Nims.

The nurses said they had been working for more than 10 years and were still awaiting promotions. Senior and permanent nurses are angry with the way their promotions have been processed.

During a meeting with Nims director Dr K. Manohar and senior administrative officers, the nurses pointed out that promotions must be on given on eligibility and seniority.

The Centre’s guidelines for nurses must be implemented and, in the matter of designations, they should be called nursing officers instead of staff nurses.

They said they must be granted their casual leaves. Interns must be paid Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 per month as decided by the government.

The nurses have warned that if these measures are not implemented, they will resort to strike from December 1.
