Hyderabad: Juma prayers amid tight security

Security arrangements were made in the old city particularly around the Mecca Masjid and Charminar on Friday.

Hyderabad: Amid heightened security, Muslims offered the first Juma prayer at Mecca Masjid since the Supreme Court verdict in the Ayodhya case.

Security arrangements were made in the old city particularly around the Mecca Masjid and Charminar on Friday.

The Rapid Action Force (RAF), Central Forces and city police were deployed. But Friday passed off peacefully. No untoward incident took place as the security arrangements were tightened.

The Special Branch had allegedly received inputs about possible protests by members of Darsgah Jihad-o-Shahadat (DJS).

Hyderabad police commissioner Anjani Kumar monitored the situation from the Charminar police station.

The Task Force had apprehended Shahnawaz Khan, in-charge of the Golconda unit of the DJS, Mujahid Khan and Akram Khan from their houses stating that DJS planned to protest on Friday after Juma prayers at Macca Masjid against the Supreme Court’s verdict. They were kept in different police stations.

Prior to that, DJS president Abdul Majid and four more members, Salahuddin, Omer, Hameed and Wasim were arrested on Tuesday to prevent them from addressing the media. All of them are now in judicial custody.
