Bengaluru: A year after dislocated head surgery, twenty-month-old Tejas is now leading a normal life.
The surgery was one of the rarest and first of its kind in the city, which was done by a team of neurosurgery experts, led by Dr Murali Mohan, at Sagar Hospitals. Tejas was born to Srinavas and Chethubai, who live in Marathahalli. The parents had no idea about their son’s neck was dislocated.
Recently when they found he was not able move, they consulted doctors at Sagar Hospitals. An MRI scan revealed that Tejas had a dislocation.
“It was a miracle that the child had survived that long, despite a severe compression to the brainstem – spinal cord junction and despite the lack of neck holding and muscular development,” said Dr Ann Agnes Mathew, Consultant Pediatric Neurologist, Sagar Hospitals.
The only option to ensure his survival was a surgery, but two issues had to be addressed. “Firstly, the severe spinal cord compression and secondly, preventing further slippage,” Dr Ann said.
Dr Murali also said that as a surgeon it takes immense courage to tackle unexpected surgical challenges that come in one’s way.
“A standard teaching in medical science is that, not all cases that we are going to treat are in our textbooks. It was a phenomenal challenge to tackle the situation, as surgery would be a major procedure requiring several hours. We are happy that it was successful. But more than the grueling surgical process, seeing the child’s unprecedented progress makes my heart fill with joy and happiness,” Dr Murali added.
