Krishnagiri teenager gets President's award

M. Akash, 15, a class 10 student has been honoured twice in a year for his innovative work that can save millions of lives.

Krishnagiri: A teenager from Krishnagiri has been awarded the gold medal by the President of India twice for developing a device that can detect silent heart attacks. M. Akash, 15, a class 10 student has been honoured twice in a year for his innovative work that can save millions of lives from dying in silent heart attacks.

“The first award was given to me in March 15 this year by former president Pranab Mukherjee. I received the second award on Tuesday from President Ram Nath Kovind,” a happy Akash said.

He added, “I decided to do something after losing my grandfather who died when I was in class 8. He died because of a silent heart attack; his death prompted me to develop the life saving device for others.” Akash said that he visited libraries to get knowledge before developing the device. He also visited many conventions related to his topic which according to him, introduced Akash to people who supported him to complete his project successfully.

The small device developed by him looks like a skin patch if attached to the wrist or behind the ear. It warns a person in advance if he or she gets a silent heart attack.

“The skin patch attached to the wrist or behind the ear will release a small amount of electrical impulse to attract the negatively charged proteins released by the heart as a sign of a heart attack. If the quantity of this protein is more, the person should immediately take medical help,” Akash said.
