Train seizure: Karnataka High Court stays lower court order
Bengaluru: In a relief to South Western Railways, the High Court on Tuesday stayed the order of a lower court seizing Harihar –Chitradurga–Bengaluru Passenger (train no. 56520). The lower court had ordered for the seizure of the train as the railways had allegedly failed to pay compensation of Rs 1 crore to around 50 farmers while acquiring their land for a project.
Following the order, the train was seized at Chitradurga Railway Station. Later, the court had released the train while directing the authorities to pay the compensation within 45 days.
Assistant Divisional Engineer of South Western Railway had approached the High Court challenging the order of the lower court. It is a matter of land acquisition case, wherein the railways had acquired land for the Chitradurga–Rayadurga line in 1986 by paying a nominal compensation. Dissatisfied farmers had appealed against the compensation.
