Bengaluru: Three students, who were busy taking a selfie, drowned at Nijagallu Lake in Dobbspet at Nelmangala on the outskirts of the city on Monday morning.

The three, students of Siddaganga Boys PU College in Tumakuru, had come for an NSS camp and it was the last day of the camp on Monday.

The deceased, Poornachandra (18), Mohammed Murthuza (17) and Shashank K.S. (17), had come with 51 other students and seven teachers for the camp.

The boys were taking part in a campaign to clean the lake and its surroundings when they drowned. Their parents were informed and the bodies were handed over on Monday evening.

The police said that Poornachandra, along with Murthuza and Shashank, went to the other end of the lake to take a selfie around 9.30 am. As he stood on a moss covered boulder, he slipped and got caught in the lake silt. Murthuza and Shashank tried to rescue him, but they too drowned.

The locals alerted the fire brigade and rushed to their help, but could not trace them. The Nelamanagal fire station staff took over two-and-a-half hours to fish out the bodies. The bodies were shifted to the Nelamangala Government Hospital for the postmortem.
