Hyderabad: GST pushes naan prices up

Bakers attribute this to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) imposed on various ingredients that go into its making.

Hyderabad: The price of naanki-roti, a leaf shaped oven baked bread went up by Rs 3 from last month and it now costs Rs 15 in the city.

Bakers attribute this to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) imposed on various ingredients that go into its making.

Khaja Abdul Hameed of Khadeem Munshi Naan at Purani Haveli says that yeast and wheat flour cost more now.

“Labour wages too have increased over a period of time and it is difficult to manage things.”

There are thousands of shops where this traditional bread is sold from early morning to late evening.

“We make the dough and prepare the naan in a big tandoor twice every day,” says Jahangir Ahmed, a baker who operates in Misrigunj.

“The bread is made in a traditional, coal heated oven, and the price of coal has also increased after the GST was implemented,” said Syed Ateeq, who has a bakery at Charminar.
