Kozhikode businessman in trouble over stray dogs
Kozhikode: The move to rehabilitate the stray dogs in the city to an estate in Edaguni in Wayanad district has landed businessman Boby Chemmanur in trouble. The police on Saturday denied him permission after stiff resistance from public in Kalpetta.
He had already transported a pack of 35 strays caught earlier to the 10-land he owned at Edaguni with the support of Boby Fans Charitable Foundation.
The people of Edaguni, a tiny village near Kalpetta, also started a siege to his Chemmanur Jewelers in the town protesting the move. Police also had registered a case against him for disturbing peace in the region.
Mr Chemmanur and his team had to roam around on Saturday with some 25 strays they caught seeking police protection to shift them which did not come. Later he approached the additional district magistrate who also denied him permission.
Kalpetta MLA C.K. Saseendran said he was not against the plan. But he should have necessary licenses and permission of local bodies and ensure the sanity and health of strays.
“After all, when you plan to rehabilitate them here protests are natural,” he told DC.
Meanwhile, the Kalpetta police registered a case against him under Section 336 IPC (for endangering the life or personal safety of others) and Section 118 E of Kerala Police Act (causing a grave violation of public order or danger).
Mr Chemmanur said for the time being the dogs are kept in a ground owned by the business group as the Kozhikode Corporation also failed to identify land to keep them as a permanent solution. He was planning to rehabilitate around 10,000 strays in Wayanad.
