Hubballi: Flood-hit Ramdurg weaver ends life

Hubballi: Dejected over the loss of his two power looms in the flood water of Malaprabha river, a thirty-eight year old weaver committed suicide by hanging himself in Halagatti village of Ramdurg taluk in Belagavi district on Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Ramesh Havalakond. He is survived by his wife and a daughter. As many as 56 power looms belonging to weavers were destroyed in the flood in the village. These weavers are facing a bleak future as the flood not just washed away their homes, but also snatched their livelihood. The hand loom, power loom, silk and other raw materials were completely lost in the river water and he was struggling to start work again.

Officials had conducted a survey of the loss by visiting the village. Though the government has announced a waiver of their loans, he did not receive any compensation to rebuild his life.

He was also reeling under a debt burden as he had taken loans from various financial institutions.
