Coimbatore: ‘Photo Protest’, lensmen contest to draw attention to civic woes

The flyover construction work began about a year ago and vehicles have been using the narrow roads for the last six months.

COIMBATORE: ‘Photo Protest’ a novel competition to bring to light the bad condition of the three most widely used roads in Karumbukadai has captured the attention of the concerned officials so much so that repair work has already begun on one stretch of the roads.

Due to the Ukkadam to Athupalam toll plaza flyover construction work, vehicles use the Fathima Nagar Road, Karumbukadai Main Road and Pullukad Road in Karumbukadai to reach Athupalam from Ukkadam. The roads are dotted with many potholes thus making it unsafe for vehicle movement.

The flyover construction work began about a year ago and vehicles have been using the narrow roads for the last six months. "Despite several vehicles using the roads, officials took no measures to repair them. However, in the second week of starting the ‘Photo Protest’ contest, repair work on a stretch of the Pullukad Road began.” Sabeer Ahamed zonal advisory convener member of the Coimbatore chapter of the Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) told DC.

As part of the contest, which began in September, participants are required to click a photograph of a damaged road, mud road, swamp or overflow of garbage in Karumbukadai and upload the same on Facebook or Instagram with #WildVS Karumbukadai or #HappyTheatre. Individuals who bring out the most pathetic civic condition will be declared winners and awarded a prize. Contest closes this month end.

‘Photo Protest’ is an initiative of ‘Happy Theatre’ which is the media wing of SIO.
