Woman attempts suicide in Chennai international airport
Chennai: A 35-year-old woman allegedly attempted suicide at Chennai international airport, police said. The incident reportedly occurred inside the airport around 4 pm on Saturday.
A passenger identified as Kavitha (35), a native of Coimbatore, had initially booked a commercial flight bound for Coimbatore on Saturday afternoon. According to sources, after clearing the security check around 2 pm, Kavitha was obstructed by airport officials before boarding as she fell unconscious. She was offloaded as officials suspected that she might have overdosed on drugs, sources at the airport said.
Even though the flight took off, she was found loitering at the airport until 4 pm. Then she allegedly attempted to jump off second floor. However, airport officials and the passengers in the airport stopped her. She was then taken to Chromepet government hospital for treatment.
Police inspected her bag and found Rs 50,000 and three mobile phones. While checking one of the phones, airport officials contacted her friend Manjula of Coimbatore. Based on her inputs it was found that Kavitha is a managing director of a popular private hospital in Coimbatore and she had been taking anti-depressant drugs for some days over some family issues.
On Saturday she may have taken extra drugs to make her unconscious and she can take the extreme step. Manjula was asked to come to Chennai to escort Kavitha. No case has been registered and Kavitha will be sent back to Coimbatore, sources said.
