Maneka Gandhi opens Centre for animal rights

Human Society International India (HSI) along with Nalsar University will run the centre and students will be playing key role in it.

Hyderabad: Union minister for women and child development, Maneka Gandhi on Friday inaugurated India’s first Centre for Animal Law at NALSAR University of Law.

Human Society International India (HSI) along with Nalsar University will run the centre and students will be playing key role in it.

HSI-India head Mr N. G. Jayasimha, who has been appointed as the honorary director of the centre, says, “The centre will study on the laws and implementation of animal rights laws. It will create a curriculum on animal welfare laws including topics of research. It will also conduct workshops on animal welfare issues with judicial magistrate, advocates and law enforcement agencies,”

In another visit to Mahatma Jyothiba Pule TS BC Girls’ Residential School in Ankireddypalli near Keesara, Ms Gandhi appreciated Telangana government for introducing residential schools.

She also suggested appointing women as drivers and non teaching staff as part of efforts to ensure safety of children in schools. She said that a meeting is scheduled to be held in New Delhi soon to discuss child safety related issues and added that a bill to check the problem is also on the anvil.
