1998 serial bomb blast: Madras High court asks Basha's lawyer to file reply
Chennai: The Madras High Court has directed an advocate, appearing on behalf of life convict S.A. Basha in a relating to ‘1998 serial bomb blast cases’, to file a reply on a petition challenging his plea to a premature release from prison.
The Division Bench comprising Justice A. Selvam and Justice Pon. Kalaiyarasan, before which the habeas corpus petition filed by Mubeena the daughter of S.A. Basha came up, has directed her counsel, Pugazhelthi, to file counter to the impleading petition filed by the general secretary, of Hindu Munnetra Kazhagam.
Basha was involved in the serial bomb blast incident, in which 60 persons were killed and 300 persons injured and the serial bomb exploded in 11 places all within 12 kilometres radius of the Coimbatore city on February 14, 1998. The judicial committee constituted under the head of Justice P.R. Gopalakrishnan to probe the ghastly incidents confirmed that Al-Umma terrorist group was responsible for the attacks and the trial Court had found Basha as the mastermind of the bomb blast.
Her daughter filed the petition seeking a premature release of her father. The plea was opposed by K. Gopinath, advocate, general secretary of Hindu Munnetra Kazhagam.
The bench directed the petitioner’s counsel to file the counter for the impleading petition and posted the matter for further hearing to October 9, 2017.
