Zoo in Hyderabad is closed as tank overflows
Hyderabad: Hyderabad zoo was closed on Thursday due to heavy overflow of water from the adjoining Mir Alam tank following incessant rains. The zoo will be shut on Friday as well.
As the tank is located next to the zoo’s safari park, the overflowing water flooded the safari park as well as the walking trail for visitors. Water levels in the moats of some animals including lion, bear and primates also increased.
An additional worry is that the water in Mir Alam tank is highly polluted. Its entry into the zoo poses health risk to animals.
Shivani Dogra, Hyderabad Zoo Curator, said that on Thursday officials from Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) visited the zoo for inspecting the situation. They will come again on Friday to conduct some temporary work outside the zoo to control the overflow of water for which manpower will be provided by the zoo itself.
However, a long term plan has to be devised to channel the excess water from Mir Alam tank away from the zoo during rainy days. In August this year the zoo had shut down the safari park due to the same reason.
Inside the zoo, works are being conducted to drain the flood waters out apart from pumping out excess water from the moats.
