Hyderabad: Just 7 of 10 tanks working; still a hit

Idols below eight feet, headed for Tank Bund, were diverted to the tank adjacent to Sanjeevaiah Park.

Hyderabad: The tanks built at seven lakes across Greater Hyderabad have received an excellent response. Idols below eight feet, headed for Tank Bund, were diverted to the tank adjacent to Sanjeevaiah Park. It was the same at Kapra, Cherlapally and Malkam Cherruvu.

But out of the 10 tanks, only seven could be made available due to delays in works. They were at Kapra, Malkam Cherruvu Raidurgam, Cherlapally, Amber Cherruvu, Pragathi Nagar, Nalla-gadla Cheruvu, Pedda Cheruvu and Hussain sagar — which saw over 200 idols being immersed until 2pm on Thursday.

One Ms Nalini Jain of Sindhi Colony, who was at the tank on Necklace Road, said, “We immersed the idol and simultaneously performed a puja. Usually, at the Tank Bund we have to hand over the idol to a crane and don’t really get to personally immerse it. The staff here allowed the vehicle to come up to the koneru entrance.” HMDA had also deployed staff to collect puja material from the koneru on Necklace road. Cranes were set up for idols up to eight feet at these tanks.

Mr Shekar Reddy of GHMC’s Irrigation department said, “We had tried to open all the 10 tanks for the main immersion day. However, due to the continuous rains, few cement works remained incomplete. Seven are now operational. The remaining two will be ready for Bathukamma. In phase 2 another 30 tanks will be taken up. These will be permanent structures meant for immersions.”
