Chennai: An all women team consisting of 12 students and six adults, cutting across nationalities and age groups, from Auroville Free School, Puducherry, is all set to travel the course of the holy river Ganga and understand it from different perspectives, as part of a project titled ‘Experimental Learning Course – A River Trail: Ganga Yatra’.
With 13 participants from India, one from Germany, two from Russia and two from France, the team will leave for Delhi on Friday.
The journey is expected to kickstart from Rishikesh on Tuesday after the team has attended a seminar on ‘The Ganga and the Involvement of Youth’ in New Delhi.
“The aim of the project is to learn about the ecology of the Ganga, as well as the implications of policies and government programmes on the river, which include ‘Environmental awareness project, Impact of hydro projects being developed on the Ganga, and Pollution created by human activity,” said Aneeta Pathak, coordinator of the journey.
“The main objective of the journey is to discover the most important ecosystem from Gaumukh to Uttarkashi as an eco sensitive zone, meet and learn about communities that depend on the river for their survival, witness the consequences of rapid urbanization, and draw parallels between specific issues concerning the Ganga and other rivers in India and International water bodies,” she added.
