Convicts sentenced for rape charges, killing a minor, murdering a govt official, accused under Pocso Act are not eligible for early release

Hyderabad: As per the directions of state government, 28 life convicts, including 17 women, were to be released on Monday to mark Independence Day. They had served their tenure of 14 years.

Their release was ordered by the home department based on a report filed by the jail authorities. The prison authorities were waiting for the signature of Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan on the release orders.

Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao, had recently announced that 75 life convicts would be released on Independence Day. As per the GO issued in 2019, 105 prisoners are supposed to be released, sources in the Chanchalguda prison disclosed. The other prisoners eligible for release will be freed on October 2, and January 26, 2023, sources said.

“We have verified their conduct during their conviction period of 10 years and remission period of another four years and have listed their names before the home department,” an officer of Chanchalguda jail said. There were no remarks on them during their conviction, he said.

The conditions for the release of the convicts are that the prisoner should not violate the jail rules or involve in any wrongful activity and should not take parole.

Convicts sentenced for rape charges, killing a minor, murdering a government official or those involved in Pocso Act are not eligible for early release. The relief is also barred for those in double murder and first degree murder cases.

“My elder sister M. Manjula was convicted for murder and has spent nine years in prison. Today on Independence Day she will be released. We have come here to receive her, we did not inform her three kids that she is in prison and told them that she is in Gulf.” said M. Kishore, Manjula's brother said.
