No mobile phones for bus drivers when on duty: Karnataka govt

Officials said that bus drivers will have to deposit their phones at lockers in their respective depots.

BENGALURU: The government will soon prohibit the drivers of all four corporations — BMTC, KSRTC, NWKRTC and NEKRTC — from carrying mobile phones while on duty. This decision follows several complaints from passengers that drivers use their phone while on duty putting passengers’ safety at risk.
Officials said that bus drivers will have to deposit their phones at lockers in their respective depots.

“We have received several complaints from passengers that some drivers are making calls, browsing social media and even watching videos while driving, putting passengers lives in danger. So now the government has instructed all four corporations that drivers and conductors should not to carry phones. The drivers will be checked thoroughly by the depot officer before they get onto the bus. So it will be enforced strictly and erring drivers will be penalised.”

According to government rule, the drivers and conductors should not carry phone into bus. Those found using a mobile phone while driving will be suspended with immediate effect.

“It’s good that government has taken such a decision. We have seen drivers and conductors busy with phones at Mysuru bus station and not responding to queries of passengers. Now, this will stop and they can concentrate on work and help passengers,” said Rakshith, a software employee, to Deccan Chronicle.
