K Chandrashekhar Rao launches Kanti Velugu scheme
Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Wednesday formally launched ‘Kanti Velugu’ scheme at Malkapur village in Medak district, aimed at providing free eye screening for about 3.7 crore population in the State, perform surgeries and provide spectables for free based on doctors’ suggestion.
Mr Rao said the scheme is applicable to all people irrespective of caste, creed, religion and economic status, adding that the government has already placed order for supply of 40 lakh spectacles.
He said the people can get their eyes examined as well as treated without any restriction on the treatment cost.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Rao said, “I too ignored my eye problems and ended up in cataract operation. Hence, I observed the need for conducting the screening tests for the entire population of the state and provide best possible eye care.”
Mr Rao said such a scheme was being launched for the first time in the country and would set an example for other states. “Many people, especially the elderly, suffer from eye problems, but neglect it until it turns into a serious issue. The problem is even more in villages due to lack of awareness and poverty,” he said.
