Din in Council as BJP demands CM’s resignation

With the government no longer enjoying a majority, the CM has no moral right to continue in the post, argued Opposition Leader Kota Srinivasa Poojari.

Bengaluru: The ongoing political crisis following the resignation of 16 JD(S) and Congress MLAs, had its impact on the Legislative Council with Opposition BJP members staging a dharna urging the chairman not to take up any proceedings as the coalition government had been reduced to a minority.

Soon after the House assembled, Deputy Chairman Dharmegowda took up question hour but BJP members opposed this contending that as all ministers have resigned, there was no point in doing this. With the government no longer enjoying a majority, the CM has no moral right to continue in the post, argued Opposition Leader Kota Srinivasa Poojari.

Tourism Minister S.R. Mahesh who was present, asserted that no minister had resigned adding, “We are ready to provide answers to the questions,” which, however, failed to convince the BJP members. With ruling and opposition members involved in heated arguments, the Deputy Chairman adjourned the House for half an hour. When the House reconvened at 1.20 pm, BJP members staged a dharna, opposing the taking up of any business while demanding the resignation of the CM. While Congress and JD(S) members displayed placards alleging that the BJP resorted to horse trading by offering crores of rupees to their MLAs, the BJP had placards demanding the resignation of the CM.
