Arulananda Nagar residents recall K Kamaraj’s contributions

THANJAVUR: Senior residents of Arulananda Nagar, a posh locality in Thanajvur town, recalled how the Nagar was born and its opening by none other than former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K.Kamaraj in 1959, on Monday, (July 15) Kamaraj's birth anniversary.  

“The Nagar was inaugurated by Kamaraj on March 20, 1959 in the presence of Parisutha Nadar, former MLA of Thanjavur and Thyagaraja Pillai, former district president of Congress,” recalled S.P.Anthonisamy, a resident of Arulananda Nagar and a Congress leader.

 

He also said that in 1959, Tanjore’s first co-operative housing society was formed. It wad called Arulananda Nagar housing society. They took over the present Arulananda Nagar area from Rao Bahadur A.Y.Arulanandaswamy Nadar family. The place was a 'cashew nut thoppu' and it was converted into housing plots, Anthonisamy said. The first selling rate was about one-and-a-half annas (ten paise) per sq.ft. When Marattas ruled Thanjavur, there were about seven forest areas in Thanjavur and one of them was 'Ramani Vanam'. Later, when British took over, most of this area became Pudupattinam revenue village and Nanjikottai revenue village.
