Swathi case suspect back in Puzhal jail
Chennai: The city police filed a confession statement of Ramkumar, an accused in murdering a techie Swathi, before the XIV Metropolitan Magistrate, Egmore, at Allikulam on Friday. The statement was obtained from the lone accused during the three-day custodial interrogation, which was permitted by magistrate S. Gopinathan on July 13.
On Wednesday, the police sought five-day police custody of Ramkumar, who was remanded to Puzhal Prison, as they required to tie-up all loose ends in investigation and obtain complete details regarding the crime from him. The police wanted to know the involvement of others in the murder, if any.
After obtaining details from Ramkumar during custody, the police produced him before the XIV Metropolitan Magistrate court at 3.30 pm. The Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP), R. Kolanchinathan submitted the confession statement to the court. The magistrate, S. Gopinathan took Ramkumar to his chamber, located in the court hall, and spoke to him for more than 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, S.P. Ramaraj, counsel for Ramkumar, filed a memo alleging that he was not allowed to meet Ramkumar during the custody and this was violation of court order.
Denying this, the APP submitted that he will file an affidavit in the court on Monday. On completion of procedure, the magistrate remanded Ramkumar back to Puzhal prison. Ramkumar will be produced before the court on July 18.
Later speaking to the media, Ramaraj alleged that the confession statement was recorded by mounting pressure and force on the suspect.
Meanwhile, principal sessions judge G. Jayachandran, dismissed a bail petition filed by an advocate G. Krishnamurthy and his junior Mahendran, on behalf of Ramkumar as there was no representation on behalf of the petitioner.
