Bengaluru: BBMP plans tech route to curb plastic menace

We are doing our best to prevent banned plastics from entering the market.

Bengaluru: BBMP is planning to take the technology route to curb the plastic menace, where it has failed miserably so far. An app is getting developed with which officials can take pictures during raids.

During raids, the culprits often bribe the officials to reduce the fine amount. This app will help BBMP top brass to keep track on the fines imposed, amount collected and curb bribery.

“We are doing our best to prevent banned plastics from entering the market. But they find their way to the city from other districts and states. Hence, we are carrying out surprise raids to keep a check on use of banned plastics,” said a top BBMP official.

He, however, lamented that officials were taking bribe and under reporting the amount of plastic seized. "The very purpose of the raids is to instill fear. Fines are slapped so that it will act as a deterrent. But the recent raids are not helping much," he explained.

The new app will make it mandatory for the official to click photos of the plastics seized from the spot, he said.

The app will be officially unveiled in a few days, the official said and added that options are being explored to help citizens also take part in curbing banned plastic.
