Mysuru: With the Kabini reservoir almost reaching brimming point, as much as 35,000 cusecs of water was released into the river leading to Tamil Nadu on Friday from the reservoir at Beechanhalli in HD Kote taluk, Mysuru district, on Thursday.
Following good rains in Wyanad and other regions in the Cauvery catchment area, the reservoirs in Cauvery basin continued to receive heavy inflow. A bridge connecting Beechanahalli and Bidaralli near Kabini dam was submerged due to the heavy outflow of water and traffic has been banned on the bridge. A flood alert has been issued to people living on the banks of Kapila river, especially in low lying areas. At several places paddy fields where the crop was supposed to be reaped, have got flooded.
On Friday the inflow into Kabini was 36,000 cusecs, KRS was 28,096 cusecs, Hemavathi was 19,242 cusecs and Harangi was 2145 cusecs.
Meanwhile there was a mild respite in the rains which lashed Kodagu since June 12 with life limping back to normalcy on Friday. With the water in full flow at certain waterfalls including Irpu, Abbey, Chelavara and Mellalli, tourists too have started making a beeline to Kodagu.
Kodagu received an average of 4.54 mm of rainfall in 24 hours between Thursday and Friday. Connectivity between Kodagu and Mysuru and Kodagu and Mangaluru is back to normal. A heavy tree got uprooted on Maakutta road connecting Kerala claiming one life. With Maakutta road connecting Kerala out of bounds for a month, vehicles now have to take an alternate route via Gonikoppa and Kutta to Kerala.
Power supply was also disrupted in several parts of Kodagu especially in villages with people unable to even charge their mobile phones. But on Friday, power supply was restored at several places. Also connectivity between Madikeri, Bagamandala and Talacauvery, Bagamandala and Napoklu and many villages around Talacauvery was restored as there was no flood situation. After it started releasing water, the level at Kabini on Friday was 2279.70 as against its capacity of 2284 feet. Last year on the same day, it stood at 2249.30feet. The water level at KRS on Friday was 94.50 feet.
Water level on the same day last year was 67.60 feet. At Harangi, the water level on Friday was 2827.08 feet as against its capacity, 2859 feet. Last year on the same day, it stood at 2812.55 feet.
At Hemavathi, the water level on Friday was 2897.16 feet as against its capacity, 2922 feet. Last year on the same day, the water level was 2855.15feet.
The KRS dam has a live storage of 14.40 TMC as against its capacity of 45.05 TMC, Kabini has 13.03 TMC as against its capacity of 15.67 TMC, Hemavathi has 16.74 TMC as against its capacity of 35.76 TMC, and Harangi has 2.76 TMC as against its capacity of 8.07 TMC as per water resources department sources.
