Telangana to bar jagir land registration

Jagir land abolished but fraudulent transactions still take place.

Hyderabad: The state government will issue an ordinance amending the Record of Rights Act (RoR) to ban registration of the jagir land.

The move assumes significance against the backdrop of Miyapur land scam where some parcels of jagir land were registered in the name of private parties.

Though jagir lands were abolished long ago, several fraudulent transactions are being done to register jagir lands due to loopholes in the existing Record of Rights Act.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao directed officials at a meeting on Thursday to draft the ordinance and refer it to state Cabinet meeting for approval on June 17.

The government will also bring ordinances to check sale of spurious seeds and fertilisers, gambling, fake educational certificates and adulteration of food items. Mr Rao held a meeting with senior officials at Pragathi Bhavan on Thursday to discuss these issues.

“The existing Acts on jagir land, gambling, adulteration, etc have loopholes that are being exploited by fraudsters. We need new Acts to check this menace. We will bring ordinances first with tougher norms so that they can be brought into force immediately. We can replace the ordinances with Acts later,” Mr Rao said.

Though the government was taking stringent measures against those involved in the sale of spurious seeds and fertilisers and adulteration of food items, several incidents were still coming to light from across the state, the Chief Minister said.

CM wants new Acts on fake certificates
“Last year, we invoked PD Act and arrested such fraudsters and put them in jail. But there is a need to bring some amendments to PD Act to make it more stringent. We also need to bring a special Act to check adulteration of food items. The new Act should have such stringent norms that it should create a sense of fear so that fraudsters know that if they are caught, they cannot escape severe punishment,” Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao said.

“After the formation of Telangana, we could check gambling. But still, a few incidents of gambling are coming to light. Also incidents of fake certificates are being reported now and then. We should curb these illegal practices with new Acts. Officials should form task forces soon after new Acts come into force, conduct raids and arrest those who indulge in these illegal activities,” Mr Rao said.
