Bangalore University trifurcation in limbo
Bengaluru: Two years have passed since a law was passed for trifucation of the Bangalore University, but there is no sign yet of the two new universities taking off.
While their jurisdiction was finalised in 2015, neither of the universities has begun the admission process for the academic year 2017-18. With no funds, infrastructure, or powers to make appointments, these universities have remained merely on paper so far.
Going by the decision taken by the state government Bangalore University was divided into Bengaluru South (Jnana Bharathi campus), Bengaluru Central University (Central College campus) and Bengaluru North University (with its campus at Jangamakote, Siddlaghatta). But no infrastructure , including of teaching and non- teaching faculty, has been provided to the new universities yet.
Sources in the higher education department claim the state government wanted the new universities to begin academic activity by 2017-18, but they are not in a position to start classes or research work this year as they do not have the infrastructure. “With the state government not making any allocation for the new universities, they are starved of funds. But we hear this year students of these universities will be admitted to the parent university and then transferred to them next year," they said.
Education experts, meanwhile, warn that the state government's lack of interest in the two new universities could affect the academic environment of the parent university. "If the state government had no money why did it opt for trifurcation and then ask the parent university to release funds when it is in a financial mess too? "they ask.
