Unions protest VSP privatisation, seek wage hike

Visakhapatnam: Employees of the Vizag Steel Plant blocked the roads inside the steel plant and gheraoed the plant’s administrative building on Tuesday in a protest against the central government plan for privatisation of the steel plant.

The police had a tough time ensuring law and order. The workers belonged to the INTUC, CITU, AITUC and YSR-TUC, which jointly called a strike. They laid siege to the administration building also demanding an increase in wages. The unions pleaded that the wage revision agreement be implemented on the lines of SAIL.

In a preventive step, the police blocked all the roads leading to the administrative building since morning. They did not allow the workers to march to the administrative building. This led to an argument for some time. There was a brief scuffle between the protesters and the police.

The unions demanded that the dues should be paid immediately to the steel workers, the honorarium for them increased and the privatisation attempt stopped by the government.
