Andhra Pradesh CJ Mishra to be elevated to SC

Vijayawada: The Supreme Court Collegium would unanimously recommend the names of Andhra Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and senior advocate KV Viswanathan for appointment as judges of the apex court.

Justice Mishra was appointed as the judge of the high court of Chhattisgarh on December 10, 2009, and named as chief justice of the AP high court on October 13, 2021. Earlier, he served as a judge of the high court for over 13 years and ranks at serial number 21 in the all India seniority list of high court judges in the country.

The collegium felt that Mishra’s appointment would provide a value addition in terms of his acquired knowledge and experience.

The collegium also considered the eligibility of eminent members of the Supreme Court bar. It recommended the name of senior advocate KV Viswanathan as another judge of the apex court. He has wide experience.

Viswanathan was born on May 26, 1966. Once made a judge of the SC, he can serve in that capacity until May 25, 2031. He completed his five-year integrated law degree from Coimbatore Law College, Bharathiar University, and enrolled with the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu in 1988. After practising at the SC for over two decades, he was designated a senior advocate in 2009.

The SC has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges. At present, there are 32 with two vacancies. With four more vacancies to arise in the second week of July, the collegium resolved to recommend names to fill up two existing vaccines.
