Coonoor: When the summer tourist season is just peaking up here in Nilgiris, heavy rains with hailstones rocked Coonoor hills on Wednesday afternoon.
Suburbs of Ooty also received heavy rains on Wednesday evening.
Though the precipitation this summer was good in Ooty part of Nilgiris district, the rainfall was comparatively less in the Coonoor belt.
But, things began to change for the better on Wednesday afternoon as thundershowers with hailstones pounded Coonoor hills. While the showers came as a relief when Coonoor town is facing drinking water problems in certain areas, farmers felt that the showers will rejuvenate tea fields in the Coonoor belt to trigger good summer yield.
In Ooty limits, though rains were moderate in town limits, it was particularly heavy in Kandal and suburbs like Thalaikundah. The heavy downpour and stagnation of water in the low-lying areas played spoilt sport with the traffic flow on Ooty-Gudalur-Mysuru road for a while in the evening.
