Govt committed to protecting weavers, says Edappadi K Palaniswami

Taking a dig at the DMK, he said the handloom and powerloom weavers were the worst affected lot during the DMK regime on account of power outages.

Chennai: Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami who wound up his campaign for the four Assembly by-elections happening on May 19, announced that the capital loans amounting to Rs 65 crore availed by the small and micro-level weavers before March 31, 2017, would be waived.

Campaigning for the party's candidate Kandasamy in Sulur Assembly, Mr Palaniswami assured that steps would be taken to waive the principal, interest and penalty on housing loans availed by the handloom and powerloom weavers of the Cooperative Society. “The AIADMK government is committed to protecting the weaver community and it is the only government that has been providing free power to the weavers,” he said addressing a meeting at Vagarayampalayam.

Taking a dig at the DMK, he said the handloom and powerloom weavers were the worst affected lot during the DMK regime on account of power outages. "After the AIADMK came to rule, power supply was restored and the Amma government even ensured free power to the weavers,” Mr Palaniswami said.
