Work on conduct of civic polls has begun: Pondicherry min

The court had directed the administration to notify the election immediately after the delimitation process is completed.

Puducherry: Puducherry local administration department (LAD) minister A. Namasivayam on Tuesday said that preliminary works to conduct the local body elections have started and the polls would be conducted as per the Supreme Court directions.

Mr Namasivayam was talking to reporters after chairing a meeting to discuss holding the local body election in the Union Territory in the wake of Supreme Court direction.

Supreme Court had directed the Union Territory of Puducherry to complete the delimitation process in four weeks and hold the panchayat and municipal elections.

The court had directed the administration to notify the election immediately after the delimitation process is completed.

The meeting, which was attended senior officials including secretary of Local Administration Department (LAD) P Jawhar, and Director of the department Malarkannan, discussed the salient features of the court order.

“A detailed discussion was held on the conducting the local body polls and the initial works have been started. Polls would be conducted accordingly,” said Mr Namasivayam.

Talking on the enhancement of taxes, the minister said that the tax enhancement was suspended following the opposition from various corners.

“It was decided to constitute a committee under Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy to discuss the enhancement of taxes. Talks were held with the legislators on constituting the committee,” he said.

Commenting on the Karnataka Assembly election result, the minister also the president of Pradesh Congress Committee, said it was victory of money power and not democracy.
