Staff demanding bribe for treatment: SHRC demands report on RGGGH irregularities

Patients undergo harrowing experience in the hospital and face serious hardship due to the lackadaisical act of the staff.

Chennai: The State Human Rights Commission has directed director of medical education, Chennai, to file a detailed report on the allegations of irregularities committed by staff of Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Chennai.

Based on a representation from Tamil Nadu Peoples Consumer Federation, Tirunelveli judge D. Jayachandran directed the director to file the report in two weeks.

In the representation, S Jafer Ali, general secretary of Tamil Nadu Peoples Consumer Federation, Tirunvelveli, submitted that staff in the hospital collect bribe from patients for providing treatment and expediting the services in the hospital. Ali said that the federation has received a large number of complaints from people regarding the irregularities committed by the staff, nurses and other employees.

Patients undergo harrowing experience in the hospital and face serious hardship due to the lackadaisical act of the staff. They have been fleecing patients for taking x-ray, scan and blood test.

He alleged that the staff complete the work only after receiving bribe from patients. Even staff manning wheel chairs and workers in ambulance services collect bribe from patients.

Recently, Anaiyappan, a member of the federation, had undertaken treatment for cancer in the hospital. Anaiyappan had alleged that irregularities are committed in almost all the departments. Ali sought intervention of higher officials to end the irregularities.
