Chennai crosses 41 degrees Celsius
Chennai: Chennai saw its hottest day on Monday in two years. The state capital on Monday recorded 41.1 degrees Celsius, due to the presence of strong westerly winds.
The recorded temperature is a departure of 4 degrees Celsius from normal, thus indicating a heat wave phenomenon. Weather experts have suggested that the people stay indoors for the next few days, as the temperature in the city would be hovering around 40 degrees.
On the other hand, Meenambakkam station recorded 42.5 degrees, which is also a four degrees departure from the normal, said an official from the Regional Meteorological Centre.
According to the data from the India Meteorological Centre, Monday's temperature was the hottest since May 2015. "Chennai Nungambakkam recorded 42.2 degrees on May 26, 2015. Monday is the second hottest in two years," said weather blogger, Pradeep John.
"There is a prevalence of dry north westerlies in the city, which would continue for the next two days. A departure of 4 degrees from the normal temperature in the coastal city like Chennai indicates heat wave. It is advisable to not venture into the heat." Mr John added. The relative humidity was at the lowest on Sunday, making it a dry situation throughout.
